Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has rubbished suggestions that striker Andy Carroll is suffering from low self-confidence, insisting the 22-year-old is merely adjusting to life at Anfield.

The former Newcastle man nearly secured all three points for the Reds late on in their Boxing Day draw against Blackburn at home, only to see his effort brilliantly saved by Rovers goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

And the forward’s contribution has not gone unnoticed by Dalglish, who has suggested that the club firmly believe in the player they bought for £35 million almost a year ago.

“No, I don’t think self-belief is a problem for Andy Carroll and I don’t see why it should be,” Dalglish told Liverpoolfc.tv.

“For us he has come here and gone about his work very well. He is adjusting to life at a new club with new philosophies and a new way of playing.

“Football is the most important thing to him. That’s what he enjoys most. He’s got a happy home life and if the football is going well and it’s the same for everyone then the home life is going to be happier, but he loves playing football, he loves scoring goals and loves being part and parcel of the team. That’s the personality he is.

“He is adapting well to the change and we’ll keep working with him because fortunately for Andy we’ve got much greater belief in him that a lot of people have that write about him.”

Carroll is likely to line up against Newcastle at Anfield on Friday following the news that Luis Suarez will be suspended for the game, and the Scottish boss has insisted playing against his former club will not affect the striker’s performance.

“Anybody that started against Blackburn has got a chance of playing back to back games, so it’s not just Andy,” Dalglish added.

“In my mind it’s another game at Anfield. Whether or not it’s against his former club or not wouldn’t make any difference to me when I consider what the team should be.

“First he has got to get picked, so he has got to earn the right to be picked. The best way to do that is with your performances on and off the pitch, for everyone not just Andy Carroll, everybody.

“The most important thing for him is for to play for us and that’s what he will be concentrating on.

“He’s a Geordie and will always be a Newcastle fan but when he plays against them he will always give his best, and I don’t think that’s ever been a problem.”

Captain Steven Gerrard made a second-half cameo on Monday on his return from injury, and the Reds boss is delighted to see the midfielder playing again, but has insisted he will not rush the 31-year-old back into action.

“Steven was back to full fitness before he got a freak injury and that’s why he had to recover again, but the two of them weren’t related and he is back and looks even better than he did the last time he came back.

“But we are not going to be irresponsible and throw him in and take a chance. We know he’s fit and we know he just needs game time in the same way as we monitored him through last time and we’ll do the same this time.”

Dalglish believes his captain’s return will give his side a lift, adding: “He looks superb at the moment.

“We have got three captains in the dressing room in Stevie, [Jamie] Carra and Pepe [Reina] so we’ve always said it’s best to have your strongest players, your best players, fit and around the squad, so we’ve got the three captains in there now and it must make us better and stronger.

“Given a bit of luck in front of goal I think it will make us a lot stronger on the pitch as well.”
