Harry Redknapp was quick to heap praise on “unplayable” Gareth Bale after the winger scored both goals in Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Norwich City.

Spurs were frustrated in the first half of their Premier League clash but Bale made the breakthrough shortly after the interval, before adding another with a chipped finish.

Redknapp was pleased to see the Welsh winger flourish in a free role afforded to him at Carrow Road.

“I freed him [Bale] off today,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “We played a different system today to be honest.

“I played with the three midfield players and let him and Rafa [van der Vaart] play spare.

“I said ‘Just go and play where you want to play basically and when we lose possession just get in a little slot. If you can get wide, do a job there, if you’re out of the play one of the midfield players will slot over’ but I gave them a license just to get up and play and join Adebayor.

“He gets in those holes and when he gets the ball and turns and runs at you, he’s unplayable.”

Redknapp was delighted with the performance on Tuesday night, which leaves Spurs four points clear of fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand.

He added: “[It was a] good result today for us. When you’re up there you have to keep picking up results.

“I thought it would be a difficult game tonight and we kept the ball well, moved the ball and passed it great tonight. There was real quality about our play.

“We just had to keep moving the ball around and I thought we’d get the chances. We had a couple of chances [in the] first half when we passed it and kept it.

“We had control of the game and that’s how we really had to continue to play. Eventually the chances came and Gareth [Bale] is an amazing player, isn’t he?”

Redknapp also suggested he was unlikely to bolster his squad in January, unless a player of the highest calibre becomes available to the club.

“Not really no [I don’t have any plans to strengthen],” he said. “I think it will only cause problems really.

“Unless, as I said all along, somebody out there was different level and you thought he could change us and take us that extra step. But I don’t know where you find that player. Well, I do know where’s there’s one or two but we probably can’t get them so it’s difficult.

“We have a good squad, Jermain Defoe [is] injured, [we will] hopefully have him back shortly – he’s in great form as well.

“So we’ve got enough good players, we’ve got Ledley [King], Michael Dawson coming back in the New Year so the squad is great – Tom Huddlestone [is] hopefully not too far away as well.

He continued: “We’ve just got to keep going. We’ve only ever finished in the top four once so it’s not as if we’ve got to finish in the top four.

“The people who came tonight saw a Tottenham team play fantastic football. That’s all we can keep doing – keep playing well, keep turning in good performances and if they see that every week and they enjoy the way we play and we keep winning games, there’s not no more we can do.

“Where we finish at the end of the year is wherever we’ll finish and we’ll obviously try and get back in that top four if we can.”
