Nairobi, Kenya — Three children were killed on Tuesday morning after a grenade they were playing with exploded in Cheptais region of Mt Elgon.

The explosion occurred outside the children’s homestead at about 9 am, according to police.

“Three children have been killed after the explosion. We suspect it is a grenade because of the nature of injuries sustained,” a police officer at the Mt Elgon police station said, quoting reports from the scene.

He said police had combed the scene and were searching for any other explosive devises in the area.

Rift Valley Provincial Police Chief Francis Munyambu confirmed the incident but he did not give details.

Police believe the grenade was most probably abandoned in the region by military forces who had been sent there to fight members of the Sabaot Land Defence Force (SLDF) in 2008.

The military were at the time accused of numerous abuses on locals, including torture.

In May this year, four children were killed while playing with a bomb abandoned by military forces during training in Ol Maroroi village in Ngong.

The military headquarters later apologized for abandoning explosive devices in the region and carried out a massive exercise of searching for dangerous explosive materials.

They also sensitized villagers on how to recognize such explosives and safety measures to be taken.

A report compiled by a United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial summary or arbitrary executions Prof Philip Alston reprimanded the Kenyan military forces and recommended stern action and thorough investigations on them.
