LAW enforcement officers have seized a hotel in Lusaka belonging to former Energy minister Kenneth Konga in the on-going investigations involving former senior Government officials.

Meanwhile, Mr Konga yesterday appeared before a team of security officers in Lusaka’s Woodlands area where he was questioned in connection with the source of funds used to buy three motor vehicles, including a Hummer.

Mr Konga’s luxurious hotel, located near the Railway Systems of Zambia station in Lusaka, has been seized under the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Act to facilitate investigations on corruption.

Other properties seized are semi-detatched flats and a bulldozer in Lusaka.

The former minister has since been warned and cautioned for abuse of public office.

A check yesterday showed that the hotel was still under construction while an access road had been tarred from Dedan Kimathi Road to the plush facility between the railway line and TAZARA House.

Mr Konga, who is Chavuma Member of Parliament (MP), confirmed that he owned the hotel but that he had not received a seizure notice from law enforcement officers.

“That hotel is mine and I do not have a manager who could have received the seizure notice on my behalf. They searched me recently, but the issue of the hotel did not come up,” he said.

Sources in Lusaka yesterday said the hotel was seized just before Christmas and that more of his properties were being targeted.

However, his lawyer, Sakwiba Sikota from Central Chambers said his client had not received the seizure notice on the hotel and that he was learning about it for the first time.

Last week, a combined team of security officers confiscated Mr Konga’s vehicles from his Kabulonga residence.

Mr Sikota said Mr Konga had been MP since 2006 and that he had been declaring all his properties, including the hotel.

At the former task force offices, Mr Konga was accompanied by Mr Sikota and arrived at the offices around 15:00 hours for questioning.

Others under probe are former president Rupiah Banda over the Mpundu Trust account that is alleged to hold US$1million, former Finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, from whose residence 1,000 bicycles were seized.

The police have also questioned former Zambian high commissioner to Canada Nevers Mumba.

Dr Mumba is believed to have solicited for $122,000 from the giant mining company, Barrick Gold purportedly to finance a cultural event while he served as head of the mission in Toronto.

But Government has questioned why he asked for the cash, put it in a private account and withdrawals were made without the knowledge of the mission accountant and other members of staff.

MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya has also been questioned by police in the ongoing investigations.
