\nThe Hague \u2014 States parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) adopted during their tenth annual session held in New York last week the Court’s budget for 2012 which will amount to \u20ac108 million, with possible access to a contingency fund of up to \u20ac7 million.<\/p>\n
The Court had requested a budget of approximately \u20ac117 million for 2012.<\/p>\n
“Today’s budget decision could have damaging consequences in the Court’s work to deliver justice for victims of grave crimes,” stated Jonathan O’Donohue, Legal Adviser for Amnesty International’s International Justice Project.<\/p>\n
“States parties have had such high expectations of the International Criminal Court, yet a few major contributors are not willing to fully fund it,” he added.<\/p>\n
In November, Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo warned that his office “was faced, for the first time, with the possibility that investigations [could not] proceed due to resource constraints”.<\/p>\n
In a report released on November, the Committee on Budget and Finance (CBF), Assembly’s expert body, noted several management issues and recommended that budgets allocated to travels, training and hiring of consultants should be reduced.<\/p>\n
