BENIN CITY \u2013 MINISTER of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, weekend, said the reason for the persistent scarcity of kerosene in the country, was because\u00a0 construction companies, use at least 26,000 litres of kerosene per every kilometre of road constructed.<\/p>\n

The Minister who disclosed this in Uromi, Edo State, shortly after he was honoured by the Edo Central Senatorial District of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said \u201cdue to the suffering faced by Nigerians\u00a0 as a result of the scarcity, I ordered road construction companies to henceforth use bitumen emulsion for surface dressing, instead of kerosene.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to him, it was as a result of problems of these nature, that the Federal Government insisted on the removal of subsidy on petroleum product.<\/p>\n

He saia: \u201cI discovered that one of the products the government is subsidising, which is kerosene, is never available to the poor masses and I found out in my sector; the road sector,\u00a0 that most road contractors, multi-national companies are the greatest beneficiaries of government subsidy on kerosene.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found out that for every one kilometre of road our multi-national contractors build, they use 26 tonnes of kerosene and that translates to 26,000 litres of kerosene and they buy these kerosene in tankers running into several millions of litres, so it is never available for the poor masses.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
