A Welbedacht (near Chatsworth) family still has hope their two-year-old child might be alive and say it was never their intention to see the woman they suspected of abducting the child stoned to death.<\/p>\n
Their child, Elethu Nziba, went missing on Sunday evening, setting in motion the events leading tothe gruesome death of Philisiwe \u201cMakhosi\u201d Macoba, 42, from Matatiele.<\/p>\n
When Elethu\u2019s parents\u2019 search proved fruitless neighbours and friends went out knocking on every door in the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n
The search party looked under beds and even in fridges, but could not find Elethu.<\/p>\n
According to the Elethu\u2019s parents, who did not want their names published, on Monday a child had informed the family that he had seen a local woman, who was a sangoma, with the child the previous afternoon.<\/p>\n
The parents said the woman, Macoba, had been \u201cinterrogated\u201d by residents during the whole of Monday. Elethu\u2019s family claimed that on Tuesday residents became \u201cfed-up\u201d with Makhosi, claiming that every place she said Elethu would be at, turned out to be a false lead.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Makhosi was questioned she said she saw Elethu crying on the street and she took the child to her house and gave her food, but she would not eat. She said she walked her halfway home at 10am,\u201d said the child\u2019s father.<\/p>\n
He said it was the time Makhosi had mentioned that made her a suspect, because at 10am Elethu had been at church with her mother.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople were getting angry with her; we at least wanted her to say where the child was. In the evening on Monday she said she had taken Elethu to a nearby stream in the area. But on the way there she changed her story,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said as the community was interrogating her, Makhosi would move away from the crowd to speak on her cellphone and that is when it was decided that it be taken away because she could have been sending Elethu further away.<\/p>\n
Elethu\u2019s parents claimed that during the \u201cinterrogation\u201d on Monday evening Makhosi had told people that Elethu was in her home and when it was searched she was not there. \u201cShe then said Elethu was in a bag on top of her wardrobe, but that only her chest and arm were left. When we searched there was nothing.<\/p>\n
Then she said Elethu was at another woman\u2019s house, but when we searched she was not there either,\u201d he said. Elethu\u2019s grandmother said the family tried to keep the residents calm through the \u201cinterrogation\u201d because if Makhosi was harmed they would never know where Elethu was.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the same Monday night she gave us her mother\u2019s phone number and said Elethu was with her in Matatiele. When her mother was phoned we found out that<\/p>\n
there were also other children there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
A resident, who claimed she spoke to Makhosi\u2019s mother over the phone and did not want to be named, said she was told that there were five children with Makhosi\u2019s mother in Matatiele.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe asked me which one I wanted. I told her the one we are looking for is two-years-old. She told me that the youngest one with her was a year old and the best plan was for us to come and get the child we are looking for,\u201d she claimed.<\/p>\n
Elethu\u2019s mother said on Tuesday morning Makhosi had told residents, who had spent the night outside with Makhosi waiting for her to tell them where the child was, that she would take them to where Elethu was.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t go with them, but what we heard was that she did what she had done on Monday. When they approached the bush she had said Elethu would be in, she changed the story when they got there and that is when people started beating her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said a missing person\u2019s inquiry has been opened in respect of the child and police were also investigating a murder and an attempted murder case. \u201cNo arrests have been made and the police appeal to the community not to take the law into their own hands.\u201d<\/p>\n
Makhosi\u2019s family<\/p>\n
Makhosi\u2019s younger sister, Mbali Macoba, told the Daily News yesterday that those who had killed her sister would be dealt with by God, because only he knows why they killed her.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow could she steal someone else\u2019s child when she has three of her own children?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
She said her mother did receive a phone call from people she did not know, asking about a child, but her mother, who is ill in hospital, thought these people were asking about one of Makhosi\u2019s children.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter phoning my mother they phoned me. They said my sister had stolen a child and they were coming with the police to get the child. I told them there was no stolen child here with us\u201d.<\/p>\n
She said she received another phone call in the evening from the same people who told her they had \u201ckilled her\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t believe them at first. I received another phone call from the police and they told me that my sister had been stoned to death, I also didn\u2019t believe this.<\/p>\n
\u201cI phoned her neighbour in Welbedacht who confirmed that she had been killed.<\/p>\n
