Stekelenburg’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and when asked about his Christmas wishes, Stekelenburg wished his technical team and players a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

“I wish everybody at Ajax a happy Christmas and happy new year, I also wish that everybody stays healthy and that is the most important thing,” he said.

“On my behalf, I will be travelling to Amsterdam to attend my sick mom, who is diagnosed with breast cancer, I also wish her a speedy recovery.”

MTNfootball.com asked a few Ajax players for words of comfort for their mentor.

Cole Alexander
“My thoughts and prayers go out to coach and his family. Stay strong and we pray for healing over his mother, nothing is impossible with God.”

Thulani Hlatshwayo
“I want to wish our coach’s mother a quick recovery, and may the grace of God guide him on his trip. When your mom is sick it’s really not a good feeling to have, so may she recover soon.”
