Gert van Schalkwyk, one of the so-called \u201cWaterkloof Four\u201d, ate three double cheeseburgers and drank a chocolate milkshake after being released under correctional supervision.<\/p>\n

He told Beeld newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday that he learnt in jail the value of small things, such as \u201cfresh air, green grass and time with your family\u201d.<\/p>\n

Van Schalkwyk said he had realised long before being sent to Zonderwater prison outside Pretoria that he had \u201cmade a mistake\u201d in December 2001, when he and three friends murdered a homeless man, who was never identified.<\/p>\n

He said it was difficult to explain how he felt after being released on Monday and that it had not really sunk in yet.<\/p>\n

His brother had showed him how a Blackberry cellphone works.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t know these things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van Schalkwyk and one of his co-accused, Reinach Tiedt, were released under correctional supervision after serving three years of a 12-year sentence for the murder.<\/p>\n

The other two co-accused are still being held in Pretoria Central prison. \u2013 Sapa<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
