{"id":1398,"date":"2011-11-28T10:48:56","date_gmt":"2011-11-28T10:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/11\/egypt-france-urges-handover-of-power-to-civilians-ahead-of-elections\/"},"modified":"2011-11-28T10:48:56","modified_gmt":"2011-11-28T10:48:56","slug":"egypt-france-urges-handover-of-power-to-civilians-ahead-of-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/11\/28\/egypt-france-urges-handover-of-power-to-civilians-ahead-of-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt: France Urges Handover of Power to Civilians Ahead of Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.rfi.fr\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/rfi-logo-en.jpg\" alt=\"Radio France Internationale (Paris)\" title=\"Visit Radio France Internationale (Paris)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>27 November 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>France has urged Egypt&#8217;s military rulers to hand over power to civilians as the country braced for more pro-democracy demonstrations on the eve of the first elections since its revolution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe the Egyptian authorities must impose public order in a different way and that it is time they hand over power to civilians,&#8221; Interior Minister Claude Gueant told French media.<\/p>\n<p>The minister&#8217;s appeal comes as Egypt was braced for fresh demonstrations on Sunday amid a tense standoff between the country&#8217;s military rulers and pro-democracy protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters have again occupied Cairo&#8217;s symbolic Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands gathered to demand president Mubarak&#8217;s ouster in February, but this time their target is the military rulers who stepped in to fill the void left by his departure.<\/p>\n<p>The Revolution Youth Coalition said it planned a million-person march on Sunday in protest at the appointment of new 78-year-old caretaker prime minister Kamal al-Ganzuri by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).<\/p>\n<p>Among the main demands is the &#8220;immediate formation of a national salvation government given full political and economic powers,&#8221; the group said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators are said to fear that Egypt&#8217;s temporary military rulers are looking to cling to power and consolidate their influence.<\/p>\n<p>The generals, led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, have pushed back the original timetable for handing over power to a civilian government and have demanded a final say on all legislation concerning the army in the future.<\/p>\n<p>They protestors also want the trial of those found responsible for the deaths of at least 42 people in last week&#8217;s deadly confrontations between protesters and police, and a complete overhaul of the interior ministry.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.rfi.fr\/africa\/20111127-france-urges-handover-power-civilians-ahead-mondays-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read or Listen to this story on the RFI website<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 27 November 2011 France has urged Egypt&#8217;s military rulers to hand over power to civilians as the country braced for more pro-democracy demonstrations on the eve of the first elections since its revolution. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1398","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
