{"id":13637,"date":"2011-12-14T19:21:54","date_gmt":"2011-12-14T19:21:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/deadly-boat-accident-in-nigeria\/"},"modified":"2011-12-14T19:21:54","modified_gmt":"2011-12-14T19:21:54","slug":"deadly-boat-accident-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/14\/deadly-boat-accident-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly boat accident in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span>14 December 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>19:21 GMT<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/57335000\/jpg\/_57335345_cccccc.jpg\" width=\"304\" height=\"171\" alt=\"A river in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region (23 May 2009)\" \/><span>The Niger Delta is a maze of rivers and creeks<\/span><\/div>\n<p>At least 20 people have drowned after an overloaded boat capsized in Nigeria&#8217;s oil-rich Niger Delta region, officials say.<\/p>\n<p>They said at least three people, including a pregnant woman and child, survived the accident.<\/p>\n<p>The wooden boat was travelling between Eagle Island and Mgbuodohia in Rivers State when it capsized on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the region&#8217;s oil wealth, most people there are poor and complain of bad transport networks.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema), Yushau Shuaib, said rescue workers had so far recovered 20 bodies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The boat was overloaded with passengers, some standing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;Emotional relatives&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Divers are taking part in rescue operations, reports the BBC&#8217;s Fidelis Mbah from the capital of Rivers State, Port Harcourt.<\/p>\n<p>There were also goats on the boat, he says.<\/p>\n<p>A rescue official in the area, Umesi Emenike, said the survivors included a child and a pregnant woman who gave birth hours after being rescued, AFP news agency reports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are lots of onlookers, curious onlookers, and some very emotional relatives,&#8221; he is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Roads are bad or non-existent in many parts of the Niger Delta, forcing people to travel by boat through the region&#8217;s creeks and rivers.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria is a leading oil producer, but many of its citizens live in poverty.<\/p>\n<p>The Niger Delta has been unstable for years since militant groups launched a rebellion to demand that the government spend more of its oil revenue to develop the region.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 14 December 2011 Last updated at 19:21 GMT The Niger Delta is a maze of rivers and creeks At least 20 people have drowned after an overloaded boat capsized in Nigeria&#8217;s oil-rich Niger Delta region, officials say.
