BENIN\u2014THREE officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officials including its Head of Operations in Edo State were yesterday brought before a Federal High Court sitting in Benin for allegedly collecting the sum of N2 million bribe from one Mr. Ted Edward Iseghoghi.<\/p>\n

The INEC officials are Chinedu Nwankwo, 46, Henry Anozie, 38 and Obiorah Enebeli, 32 and were brought before the court on a three count charge.<\/p>\n

However, Chidedu Nwankwo was not present in court as the police said he was hospitalised while Edward Iseghoghi was said to be at large.<\/p>\n

According to the charged sheet, the suspects were alleged to have falsified ballot papers brought before the Election Petition Tribunal in the petition filed by Charity Amanyanevbo of the Peoples Democratic Party against the election of Hon Isaac Osahon of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Ovia Federal Constituency.<\/p>\n

The count charge reads in parts, \u201cThat Chinedu Nwankwo and Henry Anozie being public offiers and Head of Operations at the Independent National Electoral Commission, Edo State and one other now at large at the same place, time and date, within the Federal High Court jurisdiction jointly received the sum of Two million Naira from one Mr. Ted Edward Iseghoghi \u2018m\u2019 now at large with a view to corrupt or improper interference with the due administration of justice and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 124 (c) of the Electoral Act as amended laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2010.\u201d<\/p>\n

The accused persons pleaded not guilty and trial judge, Justice Adamu Hobon granted them bail in sum of N600,000 and two sureties in like sum who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
