A penalty goal inside the final ten minutes from substitute Frank Lampard was enough to earn Chelsea a crucial 2-1 League win over 10-man Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

It was Roberto Mancini\u2019s side\u2019s first loss of the season and impacting on the result was the sending off of Gael Clichy after 58 minutes for a late tackle on Ramires.<\/p>\n

Lampard powered home from the spot in the 82nd minute. This, after Joleon Lescott got himself across to block Daniel Sturridge\u2019s shot at goal, but his hands were high in the air and when the ball struck his hand, a penalty had to be awarded.<\/p>\n

It was a great fight back from Chelsea, having gone a goal down in the second minute and the character shown in this victory will go a long way to building their confidence.<\/p>\n

Manchester City opened the scoring in superb fashion after just two minutes. Sergio Aguero spun himself out of a tight midfield area, and brilliantly slid a through ball into the path of Mario Balotelli, who went around Petr Cech and calmly slotted the ball into an empty net.<\/p>\n

City remained in control of the early exchanges and the roles were soon reversed when Balotelli got hold of the ball in midfield and did brilliantly to thread a ball into Aguero, but Chelsea had the right cover defence this time.<\/p>\n

Chelsea fought back into the match though, and once they began finding possession and then their rhythm, an equaliser looked certain.<\/p>\n

It was in the 34th minute that Raul Meireles gave the home fans something to shout about. Sturridge did brilliantly on the right flank and whipped in a powerful cross about waist high \u2013 and Meireles volleyed home with his right foot.<\/p>\n

The rest of the first half was pretty even with both sides prodding and probing for another goal.<\/p>\n

The second half saw some big tackles going in and when both Gael Clichy and Vincent Kompany were booked, it seemed inevitable that City may have a player sent off.<\/p>\n

Then in the 58th minute, Clichy was a fraction too late on his challenge on Ramires and was given his marching orders. Didier Drogba had played a quick ball to Ramires who ran at Clichy at full tilt, committing him to the foul.<\/p>\n

Chelsea got stronger and stronger as they sniffed out a winning goal and it took the calmness and experience of Lampard to make certain from the penalty spot.<\/p>\n

The home team deserved their win after a spirited performance, which saw Drogba looking a lot more like his usual self as well as strong displays by Jose Bosingwa, John Terry, Sturridge and Juan Mata.<\/p>\n

The win takes Chelsea to third position on the table, now just seven points behind leaders City and five behind Manchester United in second.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
