{"id":10944,"date":"2011-12-11T15:30:57","date_gmt":"2011-12-11T15:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/africas-2012-olympic-challenge\/"},"modified":"2011-12-11T15:30:57","modified_gmt":"2011-12-11T15:30:57","slug":"africas-2012-olympic-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/11\/africas-2012-olympic-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa&#8217;s 2012 Olympic challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span>By Nick Cavell<\/span><br \/><span>BBC Sport, Marrakesh<\/span><\/span> <span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/57258000\/jpg\/_57258022_gaboncelebrate.jpg\" width=\"466\" height=\"300\" alt=\"Gabon's U23 players celebrate winning the crown\" \/> Gabon celebrated winning their first ever continental title, having already qualified for the Olympic Games in London next year<\/span> <\/p>\n<p>Gabon, Morocco and Egypt have much to live up to when they take their place at the London Olympics next year.<\/p>\n<p>That is because the continent&#8217;s record at the Olympic football tournament is a good one.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria and Cameroon have both won gold &#8211; Nigeria also took silver in Beijing &#8211; and Ghana have been bronze medalists.<\/p>\n<p>African teams could make up a quarter of the 16 contenders in London, if Senegal come through their play-off against an Asian side.<\/p>\n<p>While Egypt and Morocco have plenty of experience at the highest level, for Gabon it will be a first ever appearance at a global football event.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Gabon &#8211; champions<\/li>\n<li>Morocco &#8211; runners-up<\/li>\n<li>Egypt &#8211; third place<\/li>\n<li><em>Senegal face a play-off with an Asian team to decide if they will go to London<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a moment of intense joy, an historic qualification, since we have not up until now tried or succeeded in qualifiying,&#8221; Gabon coach Claude Albert Mbourounot said after their achievement <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/football\/16128334.stm\">in winning the qualifying tournament<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What the players have achieved is something extraordinary and it&#8217;s an achievement we have wanted to obtain for a long time now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If Gabon are making their debut on the world stage, then Egypt have a proud history &#8211; they first played at the Olympics in 1920 and have been beaten semi-finalists twice.<\/p>\n<p>Reaching the London Games was clearly a massive achievement for their coach Hany Ramzy, who played at the 1990 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone was sad because we didn&#8217;t qualify for Africa Cup 2012 but I think London is much bigger than the Africa Cup, so everybody is happy,&#8221; he told BBC Sport.<\/p>\n<p>Ramzy sees qualification as the first step towards a new senior national team as well.<\/p>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/57259000\/jpg\/_57259505_u23coachwithtrophy.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"282\" alt=\"Gabon U23 coach Claude Albert Mbourounot\" \/> Gabon&#8217;s coach now has to prepare his team for the London Games<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s time to bulid a new generation for Egypt and for the people we have missed the happiness for the last nine months so its time to give hope to not only football fans, we are always looking forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Morocco coach Pim Verbeek says getting to the games is largely thanks to the faith put in him by the country&#8217;s football federation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact the federation has given me the chance to create my own staff and my own team and to do a lot of scouting in Europe and to spend the money to bring the players from Europe shows how important this is for them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Football is everything for the people over here &#8211; they write about they speak about it &#8211; wiining is not enought they want to see nice football too.&#8221;<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> By Nick Cavell BBC Sport, Marrakesh Gabon celebrated winning their first ever continental title, having already qualified for the Olympic Games in London next year Gabon, Morocco and Egypt have much to live up to when they take their place at the London Olympics next year.
