{"id":10839,"date":"2011-12-11T08:54:21","date_gmt":"2011-12-11T08:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/ghana-hosts-foum-on-biosafety-policies\/"},"modified":"2011-12-11T08:54:21","modified_gmt":"2011-12-11T08:54:21","slug":"ghana-hosts-foum-on-biosafety-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/11\/ghana-hosts-foum-on-biosafety-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana hosts foum on biosafety policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>You Are Here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\">Home<\/a> \u00bb <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\/category\/general-news\/\" title=\"View all posts in General News\" rel=\"category tag\">General News<\/a> \u00bb Ghana hosts foum on biosafety policies<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span>Page last updated at Sunday, December 11, 2011 8:08 AM \/\/ <\/span><\/div>\n<p>Dr George Owusu Essegbey, Director of Science and Technology Policy Research Institute, has called for effective participation of policy makers, scientists and the public to achieve the importance of biosafety regime.<\/p>\n<p>He said Ghana needs to ensure transparent, logical and administrative procedures backed by a legally enforceable regulatory regime for biosafety in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said this would help guide the environmentally sound and safe management of modern biotechnology for national development.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Essegbey made this known during the third monthly session meeting of Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB) on the theme: \u201cAgricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety Policies in Ghana,\u201d in Accra.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was aimed at bringing together stakeholders in biotechnology and facilitate interaction between scientists, journalists, civil society groups, law makers and policy makers.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative served as a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences and explore new avenues for un-leashing biotechnology.<\/p>\n<p>Biotechnology involves the use of genes, cells and tissues to manufacture substances including food.<\/p>\n<p>Modern biotechnology is regarded in Ghana as a promising technology which has a potential in the national quest to improve the living conditions of the population, increase food security and enhance health delivery.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however a genuine concern on the potential risks and benefits of modern Biotechnology or third generation biotechnology among the public.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Essegbey mentioned some of current constraint facing the biosafety as limited resources for capacity building, information access and public participation and gaps in biosafety and related legislation.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed the hope that the implementation of biosafety framework would help develop a critical mass of national knowledge and strengthen Ghana\u2019s research fraternity to enhance the needed support for industries.<\/p>\n<p>OFAB Ghana Chapter which is the sixth to be established in Africa is a collaborative initiative between the African Agricultural Technology Foundation based in Kenya and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.<\/p>\n<p>OFAB seeks to promote and sustain a well informed and interactive society capable of making decisions regarding research, development, regulation and commercialisation of agricultural biotechnology products.<\/p>\n<p>Source: GNA<\/p>\n<h4>Comments<\/h4><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> You Are Here: Home \u00bb General News \u00bb Ghana hosts foum on biosafety policies Page last updated at Sunday, December 11, 2011 8:08 AM \/\/ Dr George Owusu Essegbey, Director of Science and Technology Policy Research Institute, has called for effective participation of policy makers, scientists and the public to achieve the importance of biosafety regime. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-10839","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
