Luanda \u2014 The National Assembly (Angolan Parliament) is meeting Friday in Luanda to vote on the Basic Law on General Elections, after the ruling MPLA and the opposition parties reached a consensus on some conflicting matters for the bill to be unanimously approved.<\/p>\n
Despite being the only of the electoral legislative package likely to be approved at Friday’s session, judging from the deal reached by the parliamentary benches, the MPs see it as an important step toward the approval of the other basic laws.<\/p>\n
However, it is definite that the law stipulates that the National Electoral Commission (CNE) is an independent organ tasked with organising, coordinating and leading the electoral processes.<\/p>\n
Comprising 17 members, the CNE is an administrative entity detached from the State’s direct and indirect administration, with competence to also organise all electoral logistics.<\/p>\n
However, the negotiations between the ruling party and the opposition will continue in January next year to seek consensus on the laws on Electoral Registration and Observation.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Friday’s session of the National Assembly is also analysing and definitely voting the basic laws on Public Associations, Cinema and Audiovisual, including that on<\/p>\n
