The family of a motorcyclist who was killed in an accident last week have called on religious leaders to remove sinister elements lingering on that particular stretch of road.

Grove End resident Preston Katharayan, 22, was travelling along the M41 when the accident happened a short distance before the Phoenix Highway.

Katharayan’s death comes weeks after architect Jeremiah David, 30, lost his life at the same spot, also in a motorcycle crash.

Speaking to POST, Preston’s father, Navi Katharayan, said there was something “spooky” about the M41.

“I have travelled that road for many years and still can’t imagine anyone losing control of their motorcycle, or car. There is something sinister about the road, and that spot in particular,” said Katharayan.

He added there had been numerous deaths in the vicinity in recent years.

“I can remember several accidents in that spot. There were at least three vehicles that flew off the overhead bridge and landed on the M41. There’s something untoward about this spot,” he said.

Woodview resident Dan Pillay said he also believed there was something “not right” about the stretch of road.

“The road is fairly straight with the slightest of bends so it’s almost impossible to lose control of your vehicle. The fact that so many people have lost their lives at this spot indicates that a dark force is at play,” said Pillay.

Religious leaders in Phoenix have echoed the sentiments of Katharayan and Pillay and believe that an interfaith prayer could rid the “haunted” highway of “the negative forces”.

Spiritualist Guru Parmasivan Singaram said that while deaths were an act of God, prayer would remove negative elements lingering on the road.

“Prayer invokes positive energy and where there is positive energy there is peace,” said Singaram.

Reverend Jayce Munsamy said the accidents could have been caused by spirits of the dead, which were lingering along the highway.

“An interfaith prayer and prayer in unity will rid this road of these evil spirits. It will be beneficial to the community, and I strongly believe that prayer will overcome this darkness,” said Munsamy.

Pundit Nishan Sharma Sewpersadh said he also believed there were evil forces at play on the M41.

“We are in the age of kaliyugam (the age of vices) so there are evil spirits at work here, but through prayer I am positive we can overcome these dark forces. I believe a multi-faith prayer will benefit the road users,” said Sewpersadh.

Police confirmed Preston’s accident and said they were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

“According to reports, the victim was riding a motorcycle on the M41 and hit a Toyota Tazz from behind, causing the accident,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

“He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and transferred to King Edward hospital, where he died.

“Phoenix police are investigating a case of culpable homicide to determine the cause of accident and death.” – The Post
