THE Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) will use the forthcoming Taifa Cup Championship set for next week to pick the national team that will represent the country in various competitions.
TBF Assistant Secretary General, Michael Maluwe said on Friday that they will use the event set to throw off on December 11 to pick the side as it will feature top players from 19 regions.
“It is an occasion where we will have top players from 19 regions it will be an ideal platform to select the national team players because we believe top talents will be involved in the tournament,” he said.
Maluwe said the occasion will be preceded by the General Assembly and board of directors meeting which will dwell on various issues pertaining to the game’s development.
He named regions which have confirmed participation in the Taifa Cup as Tabora, Unguja, Pemba, Tanga, Ilala, Temeke, Kinondoni, Mara, Mwanza, Lindi, Manyara and Iringa. Others are Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Morogoro, Shinyanga, Mtwara and Rukwa while Mbeya and Dodoma are yet to confirm.
Maluwe said Dar es Salaam will host this year’s Taifa Cup at the Leaders Club and Don Bosco courts. He said teams have been advised to pay for their travelling cost while the federation will top up in their meals and accommodation expenses.
Dar es Salaam is the defending champions after winning the event in 2009 in both men and women categories. Various regions have already unveiled their squads that will take part in the Taifa Cup.
