The Alliance for Peace and Democracy (APD) has affirmed its readiness to ensure the peaceful conduct of the 2011 presidential and general elections in Liberia through collaboration with other participating political parties.

The party’s National Chairman, Dr. Marcus Dahn, give the affirmation when he addressed delegates at the second national convention of APD held Wednesday, this week, at the Monrovia City Hall.

He said the party would not be fielding candidates for the presidency because it was satisfied with the level of transformation undertaken by the Sirleaf Administration in a relatively short time.

According to him, it was unthinkable that any grassroots political institution like APD will allow such levels of transformation to slip from capable hands and fall through the cracks of inconsideration, petty jealously and tribal or class rivalry.

Describing the period leading to the elections as “crucial”, the APD national chairman said it was unlikely that any artificial roadblocks or blurred vision would derail the gains the nation had made through the efforts of “true patriots, friends of Liberia, and the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

The APD chairman noted that members of APD and Liberians have over the years contributed to the ongoing peace by cooperating with each other and the international peace keeping force, UNMIL, and that the results have been encouraging.

He said the alliance would help maintain peace in the country by remaining steadfast to the ideals and culture the founding fathers of participating parties – especially the late G. Baccus Matthews and D. K. Wonseylea – have established.

Dr.  Dahn said the cause for peace and stability in Liberia should not be allowed to fall into the hands of thoughtless sycophants, whose aim is to thwart the positive efforts of well-meaning Liberians.

The ADP chairman has meanwhile expressed gratitude to the UNMIL for the level of security it has been maintaining since the cessation of hostilities in 2003.

He said that APD partisans and the people of Liberia would not have enjoyed relative peace and the smooth political atmosphere had UNMIL not collaborated with the people of Liberia to develop common understanding for peace.

That common interest, Dr. Dahn noted, must remain deep-rooted in the hearts of Liberians by demonstrating true love for their nation during the elections period.
