Scholes spent his entire career at Old Trafford, racking up 676 appearances over 15 years which saw him win every domestic honour available.
He retired at the end of last season and will participate in a testimonial on Friday against the New York Cosmos, who are run by former United great Eric Cantona.
Speaking before the match, his one and only manager again spoke highly of his former player, who looks likely to stay at the club in a coaching capacity.
“To my mind he will go down as one of the greatest players of all time for Manchester United,” he told reporters.
“I was with Fabien Barthez on Wednesday having a chat and he said ‘pass my regards on to Scholesy, he’s the best player I ever played with.’
“You see Xavi talking about Scholes, and he’s in a better position than most of us to talk about midfield players, saying he’s the best player he has ever played against.”
The 36-year-old was famously media shy throughout his career, and Sir Alex alluded to this when asked about Scholes giving an interview at the end of the match, saying: “He might not turn up – if an interview is involved he won’t, he will be quite happy with his slippers on!”
