The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region has accused the Manager of football club Berekum Chelsea, Alhaji Yakubu Moro, of conniving with Fulani herdsmen at Mpatasie to harass residents.
According to Lord Stephen Oppong, Alhaji Yakubu Moro, who is also a cattle rearer, connives with the herdsmen by receiving their cattle and adding them to his own herd and that has compounded the already serious problems they are having with the Fulanis.
The MCE was reacting to accusations made by Mpatasiehene, Nana Kyere Gyeabour I that he was in bed with the Fulanis in the area so he could not take any action against them on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM Friday.
Nana Kyere Gyeabour I said Mr Oppong had gone to the extent of bailing some Fulanis who had been caught grazing their cattle in a forest reserve and the explanation he gave was that he wanted to send the herdsmen a warning that they will be severely dealt with next time.
The chiefs and people of Mpatasie, which is near Berekum, had earlier threatened to take the law into their own hands if harassment by Fulani herdsmen in the area did not stop.
The residents complained that they had not been able to their farms for the past ten months for fear of being killed.
But speaking on Dwaso Nsem with sit-in host, Kofi Adomah Nwanwani Lord Stephen Oppong dismissed claims that he had something to do with the Fulanis claiming it was rather Alhaji Moro Yakubu who was conniving with them.
He would not talk too much about the matter though because according to him, the matter had been reported to the Regional Minister, Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo who was seeking ways to resolve the issue amicably with the help of the regional Police Command.
In a rebuttal, Berekum Chelsea Manager, Alhaji Moro Yakubu dismissed the MCE’s claims saying he has documents to show that his operations were legal and stressed that he was not doing anything illegal with his cattle rearing business.
Alhaji Moro Yakubu said he is and will continue to be a law abiding citizen adding he will not relocate his cattle anywhere because his herd was not too large to create problems in the Mpatasie area.
