John Kumah is reported to have inferred last week on an Accra-based radio station, Asempa FM, during a political discussion that President John Evans Atta Mills is gay, a claim he has consistently denied. He was arrested whiles entering the studios of another Accra based radio station, Hot FM for another political discussion program, but was release a few minutes later by the police based on directives by President Mills.
“I have known him for more than 15 years now, and so I am very disappointed about how Mr. Kumah is turning out… he is becoming a bad example for how young people should engage in our political discourse. The comments he made I cannot even repeat them… Clearly our politics is increasingly becoming disgusting and the verbal pornography has reached an epoch that many decent people are wondering whether they should ever join politics because in the name of politics there is character assassination, no respect for truth and the values our decent society looks up to is lost…,” Okudzeto Ablakwa said.
The Deputy Minister said he was appalled at how ‘senior’ members of the NPP went to the defense of the NPP youth activist, calling him their hero instead of reproving him when the incident occurred. Speaking as a panelist on Radio Gold’s “Alhaji and Alhaji” programme, the Deputy Minister said: “What is shocking is the way senior members of the NPP rushed to his defence, and said in their own words that they were ready to die for their hero, John Kumah. What is worrying in our politics is that now there is no difference between right and wrong. Looking at this scandalous comment made by Kumah, I have not heard a single member of the NPP come out to condemn it. That is a worrying trend in politics…,” he said.
