Khurram Khan played a captain’s innings, knocking a quick half-century in the first day of the four-day International Cricket Council Intercontinental match against Kenya at the Nairobi Gymkhana on Thursday.
At stumps, UAE (213 for 10 in 67.3 overs ), Kenya (91 for 3 in 25.5 overs).
Kenya start day two of the Intercontinental Cup trailing UAE by 122 runs with seven wickets in hand. At the crease this morning will be Dominic Wesonga (34 not out) and Rajesh Bhudia (0 not out).
Batting first after winning the toss, Khan hit 85 runs which came off 143 deliveries with 11 boundaries, the best batting figures for the side. He shared a fifth wicket stand of 121 with Saqib Ali (45) which contributed handsomely to UAE’s total of 213 by the time all their batsmen had been sent back to the pavilion.
Highest wicket taker
Khan’s innings was cut short by Hiren Varaiya who had him caught by Collins Obuya with a score of 207 for the loss of eight wickets showing on the board. Khan’s dismissal led to the collapse of the tail enders who only added six runs for the loss of two wickets.
Varaiya was Kenya’s highest wicket taker, four for 45 and was supported by Lucas Oluoch (3/58 and Dominic Wesonga (2/29).
Kenya started their innings on a shaky note when Shaoib Sarwar (1/30) trapped Runish Gudhka leg before wicket for a golden duck with a single run showing on board.
His opening partner, Rakep Patel steadied the ship with a quick 36 which came off 29 balls with six boundaries before Amjad Javed (1/20) got him caught by Ali. By that time he had put on a second wicket stand of 60 with Wesonga ( 34 not out).
Kenya lost their third wicket of the day when Mohammad Tauqir (1/2) caught and bowled team skipper, Collins Obuya for 15. He shared third wicket stand of 30 with Wesonga.
