Paul Scholes has admitted that Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric has impressed him more than fellow Manchester United targets Samir Nasri and Wesley Sneijder.

Following the former England international’s retirement, Sir Alex Ferguson has been in the hunt for a replacement for Scholes, with Modric, Nasri and Sneijder all subject to interest from the reigning Premier League champions.

But Old Trafford legend admits that, having faced all three targets, it is the diminutive Croatian who has impressed him the most.

“The ones who have been linked all look like they are capable of playing for United,” he told Manchester Evening News.

“The three linked the most with United are all great top players. Of the three Modric, when we’ve played against him, has been the one I have been most impressed with.

“Whenever we played Tottenham, he was the one who stood out.”

All three players, at one point, have seem destined to leave their club’s this summer, with the Spurs midfielder attracting heaving interest from rivals Chelsea. United meanwhile have turned the attentions fully on the Dutch international – with Goal.com revealing that a move for Inter man could the Serie A side into a move for Carlos Tevez.

However, Scholes did warn that if United were to spend the outcome might not necessarily be a positive as he highlighted when Sneijder failed to make an impact at Real Madrid following a big money move.

He added: “But there are no guarantees. You could sign Sneijder for £35-40m and it might not work out. He went to Real Madrid and it didn’t quite work out for him there, so you just don’t know.”
