West Bromwich Albion defender Nicky Shorey has hailed the progress made by the club’s Academy graduates on their pre-season tour of the United States.

Midfielders George Thorne and Sam Mantom, defender Paul Downing and striker Chris Wood have all signed professional contracts with the club, been awarded first-team squad numbers and have also been part of Albion’s 26-man squad for their two-week training camp.

The experienced full-back Shorey believes that the experience will be invaluable for their development as footballers.

He told the club’s official website: “We’ve got some good young players coming through.

“That’s hopefully the next generation for West Brom. They’ve all got good attitudes and they’re all good footballers in their own right.

“Hopefully this experience will only help them in their careers. I think it is a good thing to get the youngsters integrated into the first team with the senior players.”

While Shorey thinks the four have differing strengths, they have all impressed the former Reading man with their professional approach.

“They’ve all got their different qualities and they’ve all impressed me in the way they conduct themselves with the senior players.

    “They’re very respectful but they’re not over-awed.

“They mix in well and I think that is credit to the coaching staff who have worked with them.

“They have shown them the right ways on and off the pitch.”

The Baggies tour has seen them lose one game against San Jose Earthquakes but win their subsequent two fixtures against Ventura County Fusion and Portland Timbers.
