Carroll was sold to Liverpool for £35 million in January, and Shearer has said he will be surprised if they do not use his enormous transfer fee to add to their squad.
He told The Daily Mirror: “Everyone was obviously disappointed that Andy Carroll left. But it was understandable when you look at the money they got for him – £35m is a hell of a lot of cash.
“Of course, you don’t want to lose your top players and Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan were probably Newcastle’s two best players.
“I would be surprised if they did not go out and spend some more money.
“I hope that they do because they had a decent season on their return to the Premier League.
“If they can improve again next season – that is all the fans want.
“Last season was decent and now the supporters will be looking for Alan Pardew to take them into the top 10.”
So far, manager Pardew has only signed one striker – Demba Ba on a free transfer from West Ham – while he has also sold last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan to the Upton Park club.
Pardew has since said that he is looking for one or two strikers, but that they must be a certain type of striker to fit into the system he wishes to play at St James’ Park.
