Windhoek — The Namibia Football Association (NFA) and its associate sponsor The Namibian newspaper have both agreed to continue with the popular The Namibian Newspaper Cup and have called on regions to submit bids for the 13th edition of the annual Easter weekend football extravaganza.

There have been unconfirmed rumours that this year’s edition at the Legare Stadium in Gobabis was the swansong of the popular youth football bonanza, but the NFA and The Namibian management recently reached an agreement that will see the competition held in 2012.

The NFA is thus calling upon all 13 regions to mobilize their towns and bid for the hosting of the tournament next year.

The Namibian Newspaper Cup is considered as the breeding ground for upcoming talent as many youngsters from the 13 regions went on to become household names in the domestic MTC Premiership, while they also made it to other professional leagues beyond Namibia’s borders.

Other benefits attached to hosting this particular tourney are the economic spin-offs and job creation. The tournament has grown tremendously over the past 12 years and has seen great talent displayed by the participating teams.

The NFA had certain requirements for the bidding process, which among others included support from local and regional government, standard facilities, accommodation establishments, medical standby for the duration of the tournament, catering and security.

Khomas Region are the reigning champions after seeing off Karas Region in the final at Gobabis earlier this year to win back-to-back titles of The Namibian Newspaper Cup.
