The criminal case involving three members of the National Patriotic Student’s Association (NAPSA) has continued to drag on. Readers would recall that series of setbacks have characterized the criminal trial either due to the absence of defence counsel or at the request of prosecution.

When the case resumed before Principal magistrate Taiwo Alagbe of the Banjul Magistrates’ court, Police prosecutor Sergeant Manga, applied for an adjournment. The magistrate then requested for the reason for the prosecution’s demand. Mr. Manga responded that something is in the pipeline but “It is vague, and as a result they are minded not to act on it.”

The counsel for the defendants informed the court that she has no objection “Because it is the prosecution that charged and brought the accused persons to court.” She continued that her objective is to see her clients acquitted and discharged or charges dropped against them. She, just like the prosecutor put to the notice of the court that something is imminent, but she wasn’t prepared to let the cat out of the bag.

Sergeant Manga informed the court that he doesn’t want it to seem as if he is responsible for the adjournments, because he (Manga) is not alone.

The case was then adjourned till 28 July, 2011.
