Nairobi — Commonwealth 50m swimming gold medalist, Jason Dunford will lead the Kenyan team to this year’s 14th Fina World Swimming championships in Shanghai from July 24-30 2011.

With an African 100m butterfly record of 51.85 to his credit, Dunford will take part in 50m and 100m Butterfly, while his younger brother, David will take part in 50m and 100m Freestyle.

Dunford, who held the Olympic 100m Butterfly record of 51.14 for seven seconds before swimming torpedo Michael Phelps crushed it, has been training in Italy, while David has been in the USA.

The other swimmer, Sylvia Brunlehner, has pitched camp in Australia and will be competing in 50m and 100m Backstroke.

    First Kenyan medalist

Dunford became the first Kenyan to win a continental swimming medal with gold in the 100m butterfly during the African Swimming Championships in Dakar, Senegal.

He went on to finish the competition with two gold medals (100m butterfly and 50m backstroke), three silvers (50m butterfly, 100m and 200m freestyle) and one bronze (50m freestyle). He also broke a number of national records.

David also performed well, winning two gold medals and one silver (100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 50m backstroke).

“We are proud to be represented by these successful swimmers and we hope they will do us proud.

They have been training for the championships,” said Kenya Swimming Federation Public Relations Officer, Winnie Kamau.

The team will leave on Saturday. A record 181 countries have confirmed participation in the event.
