Dar es Salaam — A total of Sh1,073,000,000 was realised during the just concluded Kagame Castle Cup tournament, it has been revealed.Jointly organised by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) and Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), the tournament came to an end on Sunday at the National Stadium.
TFF secretary general Angetile Osiah said yesterday that only Sh4 million of the money was realised during the matches held at the Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro and the rest was netted during the matches held at the National Stadium.
He said 289,906 people paid to watch the matches of the coveted two-week annual tournament, which kicked off on June 25.”This year’s Kagame Castle Cup will go down as one of the most exciting competitions. A total of Sh354,554,000 was netted during Sunday’s final between Young Africans and Simba,” said Osiah.
He said it is the first time for matches involving the teams to fetch such an amount in the Cecafa club championship.
According to Osiah, 56,626 soccer fans paid to watch the tense final, which saw Yanga clinch the regional honour for the fourth time with a 1-0 win over their traditional foes.
The lone goal came in the 108th minute of the extra 30 minutes through the Jangwani Street team’s Ghanaian import Kenneth Asamoah.Osiah promised to give more details on the tournament jointly sponsored by Rwanda President Paul Kagame and Tanzania Breweries Limited (TFF) through its Castle Lager brand later this week.
