A COMMITTEE will soon be established to deal with all sport matters in the Karas region in an effort to improve the region’s sport status.

The Karas Sport Committee will deal with securing sponsorship for sport activities in the region, organise regional sport events and awards ceremonies.

The senior sport officer at Keetmanshoop, Gladwin Ashipala, told Nampa that a steering committee of three members is already in place.

The committee will draft a constitution, job descriptions and portfolio, which will be used to establish the Karas Sport Committee.

Randolph Brian, a rugby coach, sport organiserJoseph Isaak and football coach Gibson Christian are the three members of the steering committee.

The idea of establishing a sport committee was decided on during a sport indaba that ended at Keetmanshoop on Saturday.

During the conference, local coaches, sport consultants and sponsors discussed ways to improve sport in Karas.

Other resolutions taken include the active participation of education institutions in the region in sport; participation in the annual Tertiary Institutes Sport Association of Namibia (TISAN) Games; improvement of sport facilities such as stadiums; and holding constituency games annually to involve the youth in sport.

Sponsors such as Exxaro, Coca-Cola and Scorpion Zinc Mine promised to give money to improve sport in the region, provided that they get good advertising from it and that sponsorship requests are submitted on time.
