Athletics Kenya (AK) provincial track and field championships sponsored by National Bank will be held this weekend at the various counties in the country.

Nyanza South and South Rift, however, kick off their events today at the Gusii and Afraha Stadium respectively. “As is the tradition, the provincial championships has over the years attracted world class athletes and this year will not be different,” said AK public relations officer Peter Angwenyi

Most of the provinces host their events tomorrow with North Rift hosting their edition at the Kapsabet Stadium while Nyanza North will be at Moi Stadium. In Nairobi, the championships will be held at the Lang’ata Prisons with Western Province converging at Mumias Sports Complex.

North Eastern athletes converge at Garissa Stadium while Southern branch has settled for Machakos Stadium. Newly built Kerugoya County Sports Stadium host the Central Province championships for the first time this weekend.

Eastern Province runners meet at Kinoru Stadium in Meru. Angwenyi said only Coast Province is an exception as they have opted to stage their edition next Saturday in Malindi.

He said the events will be used to select the teams that will represent the various provinces at the national championships between July 14 to 16. It is at the national trails that a team to represent the country at the World Championships in South Korea and All African Games in Maputo, Mozambique will be named. Kenya Police, Armed Forces, Administration Police, Prisons and universities have already chosen their representatives to the national trials.
