Liverpool’s Luis Suarez admits it would be a ‘dream’ to play for Barcelona

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to one day play for Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Uruguayan’s agent Pere Guardiola is the brother of Barcelona coach Pep, but the forward has insisted that the relationship between the pair will not have an impact on his career.

Speaking in an interview with Don Balon, Suarez said: “Before meeting Pere Guardiola, my current agent, I had this illusion, that dream of a chance to play on that team Barcelona. Obviously he Pere is a person related to Barcelona by his brother, but work situations are totally different relationships. If Guardiola wanted me, he would want me no matter who represents me.”

Suarez revealed he did not feel under pressure to succeed at Liverpool straight away, following his big money move from Ajax as he was billed as the replacement for Chelsea bound Fernando Torres.

He added: “Liverpool had just brought another striker Andy Carroll and neither of us feel the pressure of wanting to prove anything. Fernando, we know the quality he has, so I had to play my game.”

The 24-year-old admitted he sought the Spanish international’s advice after moving to Merseyside and he believes the Chelsea man was true to his word.

Suarez said: “He told me to be the same player that came, and not to try to change, that Liverpool are a great team, I will go a long way and grow. The truth came to me that it was great advice.”

The Uruguayan has settled well into life at Liverpool and is able to communicate well with most of his team-mates due to the diversity of Kenny Dalglish’s side in particularly Dirk Kuyt, whom Suarez shared an effective partnership with in the back end of last season.

He continued: “Amsterdam is obviously completely different to Liverpool, but this is a big city, people treat me great and I cannot complain at all.

“My relationship with Dirk Kuyt is good because we speak Dutch and it was perfect to have a partner who spoke that language, just as Ryan Babel had gone. I have also much to do with the Spanish speakers: Maxi Rodriguez, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles, and Pepe Reina.”

The striker has also outlined his ambition to help Uruguay to win the Copa America this month as they look to emulate their performance at the World Cup last year when they reached the semi-finals.

Suarez said: “I think Uruguay are always a candidate in the Copa America. Luckily, we’re playing well. This is our goal, to be there fighting for the title. You have to go into the tournament with humility, with the same mentality with which we went to the World Cup, and be serious to work to get what we want, which is winning.

“I think that most dream of being champions of the Copa America, but there you go game by game, step by step, as this will be the best way to achieve our goal.”
