Alleged Cop Killers Make Second Court Appearance

THE four men and a 16-year-old boy accused of murdering Windhoek Police Officer Penda Jason made their second court appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s court in Katutura yesterday.

Junias Festus (34), Moses Mwaskele (28), Eladi Frans (25), Petrus Kaxumba (32) and the 16-year-old boy appeared before Magistrate Theophilus Muyambero on a charge of murder and their case was postponed to July 1 2011.

Their case was postponed because the boy, who was required to bring proof of his age to court, failed to do so.

The four men have all been remanded in custody after State Prosecutor Flora Gaes opposed bail. The boy was released into the custody of a guardian.

Jason (28) had been off duty on June 19 2011 when he was allegedly assaulted by the five suspects at approximately 18h00 at the Single Quarters meat market in Katutura. Jason and some friends were buying meat when an argument started between him and the vendor over payment. The argument turned physical and a mob of people attacked Jason and his friends.

While Jason’s friends managed to escape the assault, the Police officer did not, and he was later taken to the Katutura State Hospital where he died the following day.
