Liverpool owner John W Henry has sent a clear signal that the club will avoid paying inflated transfer fees by outlining their intentions to meet Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules.

The Reds have been linked with a number of names so far in the summer transfer window but Henry insists that Liverpool will only open their chequebook if the price is right.

He was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail: “We are determined to build.

“As long as we stay within the parameters Uefa has set forth under its Financial Fair Play rules, we will have flexibility.”

Henry’s Fenway Sports Group gained control of Liverpool last season after a lengthy tussle with previous owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Since taking over the Merseyside outfit, Fenway Sports Group have talked of their desire to win by living within the club’s significant financial revenue and avoiding heavy spending of clubs such as Champions League rivals Manchester City.

The club have made one signing so far this summer, with young midfielder Jordan Henderson arriving from Sunderland. Stewart Downing of Aston Villa and Charlie Adam of Blackpool are reported targets, with Kenny Dalglish believed to want to bolster the number of British players in the squad.
