Two officers involved in the killing of a man whom they dragged from his home have been positively identified by family members. They were picked out during an identification parade held yesterday at the Eldoret barracks.
The officers based at Kapkota military removed Joseph Kapule at his home in Cheptais division of Mt Elgon early Saturday morning, and his body was later found dumped at Cheptais subdistrict hospital. Kapule’s wife Linet and 20-year-old son Gerald Erukan positively identified the two officers involved in the murder. “We were invited to the barracks where all the officers based at Kapkota were paraded. My son and I identified the two men who dragged my husband, one of them is infact the one who slapped me ordering me to keep quiet,” said Linet.
Erukan told the star yesterday that he identified the two officers from their skin complexion, height and a mark on the face. “These officers took a lot of time while torturing my father in our presence. I took time to study their faces. The two are infact common at the Cheptais market,” he said. A postmoterm will be carried out today with pathologists from the Independent Medico Legal Unit.
According to Linet people who identified themselves as military personnel from the nearby Kapkota camp came to their home demanding that they open their door which they obliged.
She says the men roughed up her husband in her presence. “They beat my husband and son and saying in Swahili “leo mutajua jeshi ni mojahapa Kenya” (today you will know there is only one military in Kenya) before taking him away,” she said. Linet said when she tried to scream one of the soldiers slapped her and ordered her to shut up.
The last time Kapule was seen was outside a tent at Kapkota military base reeling in pain, but the relatives who had gone to question why he was arrested were chased away by soldiers.
