Nigeria: Bloody Night for Boxers in Lagos

The national bantamweight champion, Akeem Muri will Sunday, July 3rd stake his belt in a twelve-round bout against Sherrif Kareem a.k.a. ‘Ring Lecturer’.

The fight which has been sanctioned by the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control will also witness seven other bouts including an eight-round national lightweight challenge between champion, Prince Nurudeen and Akeem Segun.

National light heavyweight champion, Isaac Ekpo a.k.a. Ring Grenade will engage Idowu Adebowale in an eight round non-title challenge fight.

According to the programme made available to Sports Vanguard, national light welterweight contender, Police Officer Sadiq Ahmed will have his hands full when he engages Yusuf Ahmed in an elimination bout that will pave way for a crack at the title.

Other fights lined up for the night include a national welterweight non-title contest involving Police Officer Sule Olagbade and Lateef Alabi, Wasiu Idris will engage Kehinde Badmus among others.

Speaking on the night, chairman of the NBB of C promotion committee, Demola Omotoso simply said,

“It’s going to be a bloody night. The night is bound to bring back memories past in the minds of boxing enthusiasts.”

Falcons to earn double against Germany

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday that players and officials of the National Women’s football team, Super Falcons will be paid double their regular match bonus in case of a win against hosts Germany in Frankfurt on Thursday evening.

NFF President Aminu Maigari told the ladies at lunch-time on Wednesday that the NFF is determined to motivate them to get a result of the defending world champions, who start as favourites when the two teams take the pitch at the FIFA World Cup Stadium in Frankfurt.

About 45,000 fans are expected to attend Thursday night’s clash between the world champions and African champions. Nigeria need a win or draw to stay in contention for a place in the quarter finals, after losing 0-1 to France in Sinsheim on Sunday. The Germans defeated Canada in a tough game in Berlin on Sunday evening.
