The £13.2 million paid by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to appoint Andre Villas-Boas as the club’s new manager will prove small fry if the Portuguese coach spends all of the £100m transfer kitty that the Russian will make available to him.
The Blues are yet to spend any money in the transfer window but that will soon change, with a number of big-name targets being lined up by the Stamford Bridge club as they look to inject some youth into the team.
A £22m bid for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric has been turned down but Chelsea are expected to return with an improved offer in an attempt to add more creativity to their side. Should they fail, Villas-Boas will switch his attentions to Inter’s Wesley Sneijder or Joao Moutinho of Porto; with a new central midfielder possibly arriving at the expense of Michael Essien.
Chelsea were close to sealing a £22m move for Belgian sensation Romelu Lukaku – considered the ‘new Didier Drogba’ – before Villas-Boas’ appointment and the Portuguese wants £26m-rated Porto striker Radamel Falcao to join him in west London as a strike partner for Fernando Torres.
With the Blues also interested in Brazilian wonderkid Neymar, who has a £40m buyout clause in his Santos contract, the outgoings are likely to come from the striking department. Drogba continues to be linked with a move away despite Chelsea’s desire to keep him for one more season, while Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou are likely to leave this summer.
Opeyemi Todowede has called on Chelsea to sign Radamel Falcao and Wolfsburg midfielder Diego, while Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Jose Bosingwa should be shown the door.
Mahesa Rizki Perdana wants to see Tottenham’s Luka Modric arrive at Stamford Bridge, while Didier Drogba should be sold.
