Jacob Ajom 5 May 2011 Nigeria will today begin her defence of the West African Football Union Nations Cup trophy she won last year against the Eagles of Mali in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital. Incidentally, it was the same venue the Super Eagles lifted the trophy last year under coach Daniel Omokachi whose side had just been knocked out of the African Nations Championship qualifiers by Niger. Although Super Eagles chief coach, Samson Siasia has since asked Nigerians not to expect much from his hurriedly assembled team, there is no doubting the fact that as champions they will not go down easily against the Malians.

Liverpool look set to tie up a move for Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam by offering the Seasiders two season-long loan deals to soften their loss.

Talks over a move for the Scottish international have stalled after the Reds refused to pay the whooping £12million price tag for the much sought after captain.

However, The Mirror reports that a compromise looks set to be reached after Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli suggested a player exchange plus £8m cash which would see the loan of teenage midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for a full season, along young right-back Stephen Darby.

Blackpool are reluctant to settle for anything less than the £12m valuation they have put on their player however realise that they could loose him for free if the player doesn’t sign a new contract with the Seasiders before his current deal expires at the end of next season.

Midfielder Shelvey impressed last year filling in for injured Steven Gerrard and was a £1.7million buy from Charlton last summer. Darby spent much of last season on loan at Swindon and Notts County.
