The government has shelved plans to construct a highway across the Serengeti National Park, easing global outcry by conservationist who feared it would cause irreversible damage to the world heritage site.
But Natural Resources and Tourism minister Ezekiel Maige, said the government would go ahead with the construction of a road from Mugumu running south of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park.
Mr Maige wrote the director of UN World Heritage Centre on Wednesday to clarify on the proposed tarmac road in northern Tanzania across Senapa. Mr Maige said the proposed road will now be constructed in two sections-the eastern stretch of 214 km tarmac road which will be constructed from Mto wa Mbu to Loliondo.
He said there will also be a western stretch tarmac road running from Makutano-Natta-Mugumu, a distance of 117 kilometers.
