Nico Smit 24 June 2011 Operating in an institutional environment characterised by economic and democratic freedoms, Standard Bank Namibia expects that the Namibian economy will grow by 4,5 per cent this year. Speaking at a media briefing in Windhoek on Thursday, analyst for Standard Bank Africa Jan Duvenhage said that despite highly volatile growth rates in the mining sector, as well as high incidences of poverty, income inequality and unemployment, the non-mining sector provides stability to overall growth. Coupled to US consumer confidence, Duvenhage said that diamond prices are expected to ease, as diamond production has recovered from 2009 lows, but is still below 2006-8 levels

The cream of the crop was again honoured at the annual Business Awards of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) over the weekend.

Local mogul Ben Hauwanga clinched the honours as the Business Personality of the Year. Hauwanga is the owner of the BH Group, which has a number of subsidiaries in many parts of Namibia, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He was recognised for the milestone he has achieved in business, having grown from a basic trader of spare parts to a wealthy tycoon in construction, accommodation and entertainment establishments.

Award winners in the other categories were:

– Best Communicator Award: NCCI Lüderitz Branch

– Best Growing Membership Award: NCCI Oshakati Branch

– Most Active Corporate Award: Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund

– Most Supportive Member Award: MTC

– Volunteer of the Year Award: Tomas Iindji

– CEO Staff Award: August Negongo

– Platinum Sponsor of the Year Award: MTC
