Akwa Ibom State Government has petitioned the National Security Adviser, NSA, General Owoye Azazi (rtd) over threat to public peace and security in the state. In a letter dated June 16, 2011, Secretary to Akwa Ibom State Government, Mr Umana Okon Umana, called on the NSA to investigate the activities of Dr Imeh Umanah, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, gubernatorial running mate in the state, who he accused of prosecuting a campaign of incitement that “could cause unrest, disturbance of public peace and a total breakdown of security in Akwa Ibom State.” The petition alleged that Umanah had engaged in “false, inciting, malicious and libellous publication widely circulated in Akwa Ibom State and many other places against the state governor, Secretary to the State Government and other high ranking government functionaries of the state.” The petition to the NSA was sequel to a publication by Umanah in some local newspapers in Uyo under the title, “An open letter to the people of Akwa Ibom State: Why does Dr Godswill Akpabio want me dead?” The state government complained to the NSA that Umanah made many false allegations in the offensive publication, including allegations of “murder, kidnapping, intimidation” and others that were unacceptable to men of culture and decency

Arsenal full-back Gael Clichy is trying to force through his potential transfer to Liverpool so he can stay in the Premier League even if he leaves the Gunners, according to The Sun.

The 25-year-old would prefer to leave the Emirates for Anfield manager Kenny Dalglish’s side than move to Italy, which is his other main option.

Roma have reportedly bid £7 million for the Frenchman – £2m more than the Reds’ £5m offer – but with just 12 months left on his contract, Clichy is hoping he can force a move to the Merseyside club.

Towards the end of last season, Dalglish was having to use Glen Johnson – who is normally a right-back – to play on the left side of his defence on a number of a occasions due to the shortages in that position in the squad.

Fabio Aurelio has been injured regularly of late and other options in that position, including Martin Kelly, are still inexperienced at the highest level.

Left-back Paul Konchesky signed from Fulham last summer but was unable to settle in and was subsequently loaned out to Nottingham Forest.

The 10-times capped France international has been at Arsenal since 2003 and has made 264 appearances, scoring two goals in the process.

England international Kieran Gibbs is seen by many as his natural successor in the Gunners’ starting line-up.

However, it has also been reported that manager Arsene Wenger may prefer to use Thomas Vermaelen in that position for the short-term now that the Belgian is back from the injury which kept him out for almost the whole of last season.
