Lewa Conservancy in Isiolo will this weekend play hosts to the 12th edition of the Safaricom Lewa Marathon. Regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the world, the Safaricom Marathon seeks to use Kenya’s most successful sport, athletics, to raise funds towards conservation efforts at the Lewa Conservancy as well as for development projects in the neigbouring communities.
Over 1,200 participants drawn from 28 different nations across the world will converge for the race where organizers will be hoping to surpass the Sh48.8 million raised last year. An estimated 5,000 spectators are expected in Lewa for the event with arrangements and logistics all in top gear.
“The Safaricom Marathon is exceptional in several ways. It combines an unusual fundraising initiative with one of Kenya’s greatest sporting passions-running. This has seen the marathon develop into one of the greatest events on Kenya’s sporting calendar,” said Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore on the event.
Approximately 1,000 competitors will take part in the half marathon (21Km) while another 150 will be going for the full marathon (42Km). Apart from these, 150 children will participate in the 5km kids fun run. The full marathon has attracted individual participation whereas the half marathon is a team event consisting of 5 to 10 runners.

Kenya: All Set for Safaricom Lewa Marathon This Weekend
