Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle has told Stuart Holden that he will have to ensure he is fully fit before returning to first-team football.

Holden suffered a nasty knee injury after coming off worst in a clash with Manchester United’s Jonny Evans and was initially expected to be out for six months.

Coyle told the Bolton News: “Stuart’s like a kindred spirit, so positive in his outlook and in everything he does – I love that about him.

“He’s optimistic and he is improving no doubt about it but we have to make sure we pick the right moment to bring him back and not push him at all.

“Stu has targeted the middle of September. My medical lads are a wee bit more wary.

“If we get him back at that point I’d be thrilled, but we might just have to be a bit patient.”

Holden has suffered serious injuries before in his time at the Reebok stadium.

He broke his leg in a challenge with Nigel de Jong while on international duty in 2010 which limited Holden’s debut season with the club to just three appearances.

Last season Holden played 30 games before suffering his current injury.
