Newcastle United assistant manager John Carver is expecting Sylvain Marveaux to make a big impact at St. James’ Park.
Carver has praised the former French Under-21 international’s versatility and expects him to provide chances for the Toon front-line.
Speaking to the Chronicle, Carver said: “We’re pleased to get a player who can play on the left or right side.
“We want players who can get fans on the edge of their seats, like Laurent Robert. His deliveries and goals were second to none.
“Hopefully, Sylvain can provide the same sort of assists.”
Robert played at St. James’ Park between 2001 and 2006, scoring 32 in 181 appearances and his spectacular long-range goals are still remembered fondly by Toon fans.
Marveaux will be hoping to make a similar impact despite doubts surrounding his fitness.
The frenchman reportedly failed a medical at Liverpool before signing for Newcastle but Carver has rubbished claims that the winger isn’t fit enough for the Premier League.
He continued: “Liverpool were keen on him, but negotiations broke down, and obviously we took him.
“There have been question marks over his injuries, but one reason he didn’t play towards the end of last season was that the club knew he was leaving.”
Marveaux made over 100 appearances for Rennes before signing for Newcastle but was restricted to only 10 appearances last term after suffering a serious groin injury.
