Girls’ League Soccer Kicks Off

St George’s Diocesan School is leading the Telecom Girls League Soccer (GLS) log after the first round kicked off on June 10.

The GLS is for girls aged between 14 and 18 and was founded by Martin Brosda, the youth coordinator of Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW).

Three games took place at the SKW grounds in Olympia and at the end of the day St George’s emerged top of the log after comfortably beating St Paul’s College 3-0 in the opening match.

Striker Hilya Intamba secured her place in the history books of the GLS by scoring the inaugural competition’s first goal when she put St George’s into the lead after just 14 minutes.

Abrille Beukes extended the lead when she converted a penalty just after halftime before Intamba scored in the dying minutes of the game to put the final score at 3-0 for St George’s.

In the second game, the ambitious SKW girls welcomed Emma Hoogenhout Primary School. After a goalless first half, all seemed to go according to plan for the hosts, when attacking midfielder Corinna Grünewald and winger Nienke Spijker gave SKW a 2-0-lead.

However, when Emma’s Lena Noreses made it 1-2 with a beautifully converted freekick from just outside the box, SKW started to flounder and conceded a second goal in the final moments of the game.

“Unfortunately, my players never found their rhythm and especially in the second half we didn’t play according to our game plan”, said a disappointed SKW coach Martin Brosda.

In the action-packed last game of the day, Delta Senior Secondary School (DSSW) and Hochland High School battled it out for a 2-2-draw. Hochland’s Matende Agusta found the back of the net with a header and Charline Chizabulwo made it 2-0 at the beginning of the second half.

After several missed chances, the goal of speedy winger Christel Kotze gave DSSW some hope. Only two minutes later, referee Harry January awarded a penalty to Delta, but Salome Guises couldn’t get the ball past Hochland’s goalkeeper Innocent Nghishoono, whose saves appeared to have secured the victory for her school.

However the DSSW girls stayed on the offensive and with two minutes to go they were rewarded for their effort as Amy Walters grabbed a deserved equaliser.

A day before the action, the organisers of the GLS had announced Telecom Namibia as the main sponsor of the league. Telecom Namibia’s senior manager for advertising and promotions, Felicitas Kakoro-Gowases, announced that Telecom would sponsor the GLS with N$10 000 in addition to football equipment for the seven competing teams and the organisers.

The cooperation was initiated by SKW’s football committee member Harald Fülle.

“Telecom Namibia was from the start enthusiastic about our project and agreed immediately to become our main sponsor,” said Fülle.

Kakoro-Gowases said: “We want to support the young female football players and maybe some of them will even develop into national players.”

According to Kakoro-Gowases, Telecom Namibia got involved in the GLS because private and public schools, and thus girls from very different backgrounds, participate in the project and benefit from the sponsorship.

This coming Friday, June 24, the second round of the Telecom GLS will take place from 14h00 at SKW.
