TAITA police have have arrested 17 Ethiopian illegal immigrants. The group was nabbed at the Mwakitau roadblock along the Mwatate Taveta road on board a tour van on their way to Mombasa. Their previous attempts to sneak into South Africa through Mozambique and Tanzania were thwarted by police. Police said two others are being sought after they escaped at the Taveta border point.

The group was arrested after residents of Taveta who saw the suspects boarding a tours van alerted the police leading to the arrest. “We have realized that the suspects were earlier detained in Mozambique and it appears the government of Mozambique had dodged the responsibility of deporting them to Ethiopia and took them back to Tanzania. The same applies to Tanzania who pushed them to Taveta,” said Taita OCPD Nathaniel Aseneka. Police had to get a translator since the aliens could not speak English or Swahili.
