Karas governor Bernadus Clinton Swartbooi has reiterated Government’s policy of not interfering in traditional chieftaincy disputes, and added that power struggles are not conducive to socio-economic growth.
Swartbooi made these remarks while addressing the Haboben and Kharo!Oan Nama tribes under the Blouwes Traditional Authority (BTA) at Blouwes on Friday.
The Haboben and Kharo!Oan tribes are embroiled in a succession dispute sparked by the death of the late Chief Hans Titus in 2007.
The governor’s remarks preceded the controversial inauguration of Dawid Cassius Gertze as the Haboben tribe’s chief on Saturday.
Swartbooi urged communities to look for amicable solutions to solve their chieftaincy disputes.
Swartbooi rejected the “divide and rule” tactics of some political and traditional leaders as unacceptable.
“Division is for weak people, and unity is power. The divide-and-rule tactics rearing its ugly head in the Karas Region is not acceptable,” said Swartbooi.
Urging communities to desist from alcohol and drug abuse, Swartbooi urged them to seize opportunities created by the “ballooning economy” in the region to improve their living standards.
He added that Government is determined and committed to drive socio-economic initiatives to the benefit of the entire Namibian nation.
