Manchester United target David de Gea has dropped the latest hint that he wants to join the Premier League champions after admitting two of his idols played at Old Trafford.
The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper is being lined up to replace Edwin van der Sar, who retired at the end of last season.
De Gea is currently at the European Under-21 Championships with Spain, and, according to reports, is expected to complete his move to Manchester once he returns from Denmark.
“Manchester United are a great club and being associated with them is a great compliment for me, but Atletico are also great,” he told AS.com.
“I liked watching Schmeichel when I was young and also Van der Sar, both are among the best I have seen.
“For me Edwin is a reference point. He has been playing at the highest levels for 20 years. He has shown he is a great goalkeeper.”
Asked whether he wants to make the step up in quality with a big club like United, De Gea said: “Everyone wants to do this, you want to carry on learning, improving, this happens in all areas of life.”
