THE National President of the Association of the National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Hajia Ladi Ibrahim, has charged accountants in the public and private sectors of the economy to abide by the code of conduct of the profession and shun corruption in the discharge of their duties.
She disclosed that the association would soon establish a forensic accounting research centre at the accountancy department of the Kogi State University, Anyigba in order to prepare accountancy students for the future challenges ahead of them in the accountancy profession.
Ibrahim who hails from Adavi local government area of Kogi State disclosed this while speaking during the first award night and grand reception in Lokoja held in her honour by the Kogi State chapter of the association.
She pointed out that when established, the centre would assist the accounting professionals and graduates of the discipline on how to carry out investigation to detect fraud being perpetrated on daily basis in every sector of the nation’s economy.
The ANAN President equally urged her members to exhibit competence in whatever sector of the nation economy they find themselves, explaining that this would go a long way in convincing the public and the organizations they work for that they are truly professionals who know their worth.
“I want to use this ceremony to also charge you (accountants) to strive hard in adding value to your employer’s legal activities and also carry out your legitimate responsibilities with profound ethical conduct as contained in the rules and regulations of this noble association,” she added.
The ANAN President also alleged that most of the scams associated with accounting officers in their respective places of work were not usually true as a trained financial officer would never indulge in irregularities, stressing that the majority of those involved in one fraud or another were quacks who had nothing to fear because they had no professional integrity.
She challenged members of the association in the country to protect their integrity by doing what was right in the eyes of the law as well as the accounting procedures and stop conniving with public office holders to loot the treasury.
Ibrahim then commended the Federal Government for putting in place Fiscal Responsibility, Procurement and Due Process Acts, adding that these would help to check the excesses of any public and civil servants who might be thinking that they could defraud the government or the private sector without the law catching up with them.
Earlier, the state Chairman of the association, Alhaji Ahmed Chogudo said the reception and the award bestowed on some deserving professional members were based on their meritorious services rendered to Kogi State as well as the advancement of the entire country through their chosen career as accountants.
One of the recipients, Dr. Jacob Ekele expressed appreciation for the honour given him by the professional body, adding that the award was a challenge to the recipients to sit up and take their jobs seriously.
Ekele who is the state coordinator of the National Examination Council (NECO) explained that the era of the new president who is an indigene of the state would bring outstanding innovations, transparent leadership and people-oriented programmes that would stand the test of time in the association.
